Tepin Big Harvest Chili Seeds

Info: The Tepin or Chiltepin is considered an prototype of chillies which can be found today primarily in the Sonora Desert (Northern Mexico) as well as Texas and Arizona. The name originates from the Aztecs, and meant “flea chili” in their language. The usage of the Tepin as a spice and medicine goes back 9000 years. Since the berries of the wild plants are still laboriously harvested by hand today, this makes the Chiltepin one of the most expensive spices in the world.

The Tepin Big Harvest Chili is a breed which, unlike its small relatives, has a very short germination period. The plants grow very quickly and have an extremely high yield. The fruits are somewhat larger than those of the original Tepin, but are just as spicy. They are mainly used dried and crushed for seasoning sauces, stews and meat dishes.

Care: The germination temperature is between 22  und 28°C (8 - 20 day germination period), therefore the use of a greenhouse and a heating mat is recommended. The plants need fresh, well-fertilised, permeable soil, and do not tolerate waterlogging. They should be planted in a sunny, protected place with at least 6 hours of sunlight - preferably more. Put the plants outside approx. 2 to 3 weeks after the last frost.
